Abstract
3-Dimethylamino-2-arylacrylic acid esters, 3-dimethylamino-2-aryl-acrylonitriles, and 3- dimethylamino-1,2-diaryl-propenones are vinylogous three-carbon building blocks that have been shown to readily convert to regiospecifically functionalized pyrroles in 1-2 steps. 3-Dimethylamino-2-arylacrylic acid esters have also been shown to convert to 3-aryl quinolones in 2 steps. The synthetic schemes and reaction scope are presented as follows.
