Abstract

As creatures of story, people connect through narrative. The medical sciences are rich with narrative, from the patient's illness experience to the physician's retelling through a diagnosis. As healthcare's current mechanistic tide of care leads to patient dehumanization studying character is one way we can learn about people from people. Building on existing narrative medicine literature, this thesis analyzes one forms of character through a medical lens: the spiritual autobiography and the novel.
