Abstract
By 1870 the "corner" had been rounded. The end of reconstruction was in full view and was momentarily expected. Still, the hope for the reestablishment of Virginia's former status was based entirely upon rumor. It was a period when people held their breaths. Readmission was being fought bitterly in the congress. To Sumner the election in Virginia had been just one big fraud and the state was still "smoking with rebellion.
