Regio I – Latium et Campania: Fascicolo V. Pompeii – Tituli Scariphati

Abstract

Our first edition of Italia Epigraphica Digitale, vol. 2 (Latium et Campania), fasc. 3 (Pompeii et Herculaneum: Graffiti), published in 2017, documented 1113ancient graffiti, or handwritten wall-inscriptions, edited by our team. This essay highlights developments since 2017 and presents the current state of digital critical editions for this material as of July 2020.

EDR now features a total of 1907 ancient graffitiedited by our team and deriving from three main locations: Herculaneum, Pompeii, and the ager Pompeianus. The work completed between 2017 and 2020 represents three main accomplishments: 1) continued creation of digital editions (schede) of handwritten wall-inscriptions, 2) fieldwork documenting surviving ancient graffiti, and 3) revision of previously published inscriptions with enhanced information including fieldwork results. We have also been updating schedeinherited from the Heidelberg database that werebegun with very limited information and then suspended. The SATOR square is one such inscription; multiple schede had been started for it, each listing a single or a pair of AE entries. Now, as a resultof our efforts, a single comprehensive entry is complete with text, all other fields, and full bibliography (n. 8 = EDR073638)
