Each year, Michelle Rahman, the Associate Dean for Admissions at the University of Richmond School of Law, presents an orientation speech that describes, in anonymous terms, the various merits, skills, and experiences of the incoming class of law students. Typically included are comments about the students’ average age, geographic diversity, undergraduate majors, LSAT scores, previous work and volunteer experiences, travel, and other “factoids” gleaned from reviewing the detailed application materials of talented students. This collection brings together Dean Rahman’s speeches from 1996 to 2017, for the law class of 1999 to the class of 2020. Her challenge to the listening students –the Richmond Law Challenge– is to hear the pieces of each other’s unique stories and begin to get to know one another. As she said in 2008, “The trick is to guess who is who. I challenge you to use the next three years to find out!”
