Abstract
Put simply, today’s landscape of social media is a bit of a mess. A swath of recent scholarship has rightly tracked major shifts in social media, including the rise of walled gardens, enshittification (Doctorow, 2023), numerous privacy concerns (Couldry and Mejias, 2019; Marwick, 2023), and the general rise of what Shoshana Zuboff (2020) has termed ‘surveillance capitalism’. Though social media has undoubtedly brought many benefits, it is increasingly difficult to overlook its negative underbelly. Given this context, Robert Gehl’s recent book, Move Slowly and Build Bridges makes a timely contribution to studies of new media by examining alternative social media platforms and demonstrating possibilities beyond the corporate-controlled platforms that many of us have become accustomed to.
