Abstract
"John Wadleigh enlisted five times in the Continental Army. A diminutive but “hard-handed” man lauded for his prodigious work ethic, Wadleigh responded to the Cambridge Alarm in April 1775. His regiment anchored the left flank of the Patriot line arrayed on Breeds Hill and was “one of the last to leave the scene of action.” Over the next six years, this son of a prosperous Hampstead, New Hampshire, farm family marched on Quebec, witnessed Burgoyne’s surrender at Saratoga, and fought invading British forces to a standstill in Rhode Island."
