Abstract
The purpose of this study was to discover contributing factors which bear on the public education as it exists in Hanover County today. In developing this study some of the private academies which existed in the nineteenth century have been mentioned briefly. The ultimate objective of this paper was to show the early struggle for the public free schools in Hanover County and how the public schools have developed.
