Abstract
Research states that elementary science is about twenty-five years old -- a recent addition to the curriculum. Changes in a new area in elementary teaching usually come slowly. The rapid development of the science program has resulted from the tremendous pressure of various groups to gain child attention. The weight of the national and international events have forced public opinion to consider science teaching in the elementary school as a necessity.
The American elementary school is a unique institution. It is the foundation for the citizens in a democracy. This assigns to the elementary school teacher many professional tasks. She becomes a specialist in the education of children. Teaching science is only one of her functions.
