History's Old Dominion
Abstract
In December of 2021, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced the removal of a statue in Richmond honoring General Robert E. Lee. The 21-foot bronze statue had stood atop a 40-foot granite pedestal for 132 years.
For decades, white Southerners contended that Confederate statues were war memorials — tributes to those who had fought and died on behalf of the Confederacy. In actuality, Confederate memorialization was part of a much longer and larger battle — a battle over historical interpretation, historical truth, and historical mythology.
