Abstract

The whole point of the raid was the destruction of as much of the supplies which might be used by the Confederates as possible and the release of those Federal prisoners which were incarcerated in Richmond. One has only to look ahead to the burning of Columbia, South Carolina to see what might have happened in Richmond.
