Description
As COVID-19 swept across the globe during the early months of 2020, countries undertook drastic measures to slow the spread of the deadly virus. These initiatives included border closures and stay-at-home orders. International trade declined and countries turned inward to address the most severe public health crisis in a century. In the wake of these changes, globalization slowed to a standstill and many citizens began to question the sustainability of the existing economic order.
The unexpected events of 2020 point to a potentially transformative moment for the global economic system and underscore a pressing question: has the pandemic altered the trajectory of globalization? This storymap investigates this question in four different countries, telling a complicated and diverse story of how globalization evolved during the past forty years, how the pandemic came to be, how each state responded to COVID-19, and whether each country is likely to witness a transformation of the neoliberal development model.
