Number 4 (1978)

Cover illustration

Giuseppe Verdi holding the score of Macbeth: one of a group of three miniatures (the others are of Giuseppina and Barbarina Strepponi) probably painted in Florence in 1847. For many years they were in the possession of Romilda Pantaleoni, the first Desdemona; they were sold by Pantaleoni heirs to the Milanese publisher Hoepli, and then went to the Milanese collector Natale Gallini. (See Abbiati: Verdi, i 685.) From the Danville exhibition (photograph, Costa, Milan).
