Abstract
The objeat of this study is two-fold. First, an attempt will be made to present a comprehensive review of the literature concerned with the classification of the species within the genus Proteus according to their biochemical reactions since the publication of the fifth edition of Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (1939). The literature concerned with the use of various urea media for the determination of the genus Proteus will also be reviewed.
Second, oul.tures of non-1.actose fermenting, urease positive organisms isolated from rats trapped in the Richmond area will be studied and their classification in the genus Proteus determined by means of certain biochemical tests. The occurance of Proteus species in live animal.s will be studied with relation to their isolation with Bacto SS Agar (Difeo) and Selenite F enrichment medium.
