Abstract

In 1929, Caroline Bamberger Fuld and her brother, Louis Bamberger, sold their department stores, Bamberger & Co., at a particularly timely moment. They invested their sizeable fortune in a new academic initiative in America, an institute devoted to research that would go by the name of the Institute for Advanced Study. This paper introduces two colleagues, Abraham Flexner and Oswald Veblen, and explores the cooperation and conflict between them as they worked alongside one another to shape the Institute for Advanced Study and the School of Mathematics within it.
