Abstract
Man and a few of the lower animals possess what may be called Number Sense. This is the power to recognize a change in number in a small collection without actually counting the collection.
The cardinal number is based on this principle of correspondence. We now no longer look for model collections; we set one collection into one-to-one correspondence with the natural numbers; in other words, we count it.
