Abstract
Often in business articles the following remark may be seen: "If a company is to growing, it is retrogressing; for no business may stand still!" The sagacity of this observation with regard to individual enterprises cannot be stressed too frequently nor too strongly. Yet this truism becomes even more appropriate and apparent when applied to a nation's economy. Although this paper deals primarily with common stocks, seldom can any part of a nation;s economy move independently of the total trend. Therefore, a few explanatory remarks regarding the United States economy are in order.
